While I was at FanX, I had someone (Cody) ask if I could say a few words for a podcast for creative entrepreneurs. I laughed as I asked him if he’d read my blog; why sure, I can say a few words! I’ve been cheerleading the creative entrepreneur for years.
Then, of course, the instant fear set in. What would I say? I’m a writer, not a speaker.
It took me a good moment to settle down and get my act together. Then, as Cody and I talked, I was fine as long as I kept my eyes focused on his face. If I looked toward the phone he held to record us, well, things didn’t feel too good.
I’m currently out at FanX Salt Lake. We’re still an hour away from the show’s official start with VIP’s entering.
I hope I’ll get out to walk around tomorrow, but for now I’m sitting at my booth trying to get myself psyched up for the day ahead. Yeah, I was ready for this a week ago (grin) and now I want to be out adventuring instead. Maybe that speaks to my vibe being off.
Oh, I’ll get there again. I always do. I’m ready to rock this. I have new titles on my table: 1-800-CallLoki (the Loki Adventures omnibus), Let’s Make A Deal, and Space Ninjas Aren’t Real. I guess Prince of the Ruined Land is new to this show too, so if you have the first 3, you better come get #4.
I forgot my hat. That makes me a little sad. I wonder where it went because it wasn’t with the rest of my show stuff. As I wrote that, I wonder if I had taken it home. I think I did because I’d been planning on re-packing my shirts in there as soon as I had the dry cleaned. After I did that, I went to plan be and forgot my hat. Yeah.
Outside, the crowd cheers. They are really getting worked up. I hope the attendees have a great time.
What’s that all about, you ask. Well, I was reserving July 6th and 7th on my calendar because the weekend after the 4th of July is typically held open for a show I like to participate in. Guess that doesn’t count when the 4th is so close to the weekend. Maybe I’m just a little off since I didn’t do the show last year – remember the little voice telling me that I couldn’t do any shows until September (and then the reason why I kept getting that feeling).
Anyway, so I had this date all cleared. Then I get my application and it is for the same date that Wizard World Boise is going on (that’s July 13th-15th in Boise, Idaho). Unfortunately, I still haven’t learned how to be in two places at once. I am glad, however, that I read and thought about the dates on the application before filling it out and sending it in.
If you want to stay up to date with the comics there, I suggest subscribing to the email (the box on the right). Honestly, I have no idea if it works (yet) as I just remembered to subscribe myself to it yesterday.
Yes, I subscribe to my own blogs. Yes, I’m a goober. I know. (grin)
This is just the pencils for this page. Inking and toning to come. Progress!
I do love Lucky’s wimpy arms in the upper panel. You see, Lucky is actually the younger of two brothers. His older brother is the buff, athletic guy. Unfortunately, the events that befall the brother make Lucky into a computer nerd. He’s spent many hours researching and digging through bad scans of arcane texts in a desperate attempt to translate them. He knows just enough to be dangerous.
But oh so much more than what Caitlyn knows. (grin)
I have always felt like this Bite (chapter) of Weblinks is talking heads, but there is so much information here. Don’t worry. We’ll get back to the action soon.
P.S. If you’re wondering why there has been no dialog on these pages, it’s because I’ve taken it off. There is a joke on this page that I’m particularly fond of and I don’t want to ruin it for readers who might see it here first. So, if you want to know what it is, you’ll have to get to reading the comic. Hopefully this page will post next week, maybe two weeks from now.
Check out the new comic website while you’re there. Of course, it will be changing again soon (more on this next Monday). It also isn’t as nearly complete as I wish it was, but it will do for the moment until I can get other things rearranged.
If someone has an idea for a name for my comic site, I’d love to hear it. I really liked Legendary Hero Comics, but, well, again, more on that Monday.
This week I started working on a new page for Weblinks. I have the whole chapter (currently in chapter (a.k.a. Bite) 5 of the story) done in rough sketches, but when I got to this page, I didn’t really like the layout I had for it. It was time to re-envision the page.
So I did.
You can see the new rough sketch in light green. The black on top is my new rough pencil layer.
You can see that rough sketches are really rough. They are never pretty. In fact, sometimes when I come back to them after an interlude (boy, that’s a nice way of saying that I haven’t gotten to it for several months to a year!), I wonder what point I was trying to get across.
I also have a lot of dialog on the page and it’s not yet in its final placement. But I have it there to give me an idea of how much space I will need.
It’s kind of challenging figuring out how to draw pages when you have two characters sitting in a cafe having a moderately intense conversation that if they got too loud everyone else around them would think they were crazy. This might not have been the best scene to place them in, but when I wrote the chapter I wasn’t thinking about the challenges involved in drawing the scene. I’m such a green graphic novelist!
I would love to point you all in the direction to read Weblinks if you wanted to start from the beginning and get caught up. I hope to post the previous page to this one next week. However, due to my continuing challenges over my domain names, I don’t know if I’ll have a site to point people to. (Oh ye of little faith!). Time to get my other site up and running. I think this weekend I’ll be hard at work on that. “Yeah, I didn’t have any other projects that need to be worked on right now, ” I say with heavy sarcasm.
